With the price of eggs creeping so unghastly high, it brings me great pleasure to enter my chicken coop and gather a basket of eggs for FREE. Our chicken food is roughly the same price as one and half dozen eggs purchased at the market right now and lasts almost one month. Our flock enjoys free-range access which also keeps the bugs down during the summer and fall. During the winter, I buy dried bugs to supplement the absence of natural bugs. They like clean water, straw in the nesting boxes, and protection from the raccoons at night. (We learned that the hard way.) I use the manure in my garden and flower beds.
Raising backyard chickens is a marvelous step toward self-sufficiency.
